Description
A substantial and highly unusual working archive from the Caledonian Railway Solicitor's Office in Glasgow, preserving an important collection of original nineteenth-century Acts of Parliament documenting the rapid expansion of Scotland's railway, harbour and navigation infrastructure.
Rather than being assembled by a collector, these volumes were created for practical legal use by one of Britain's principal railway companies. Uniformly bound with gilt ownership titles to the covers, they represent the working legal library upon which the company's solicitors relied when dealing with amalgamations, harbour powers, bridge construction, navigation rights and railway administration.
The collection spans over six decades of railway history, from the formative years of railway legislation through to the great engineering achievements of the late Victorian period, including legislation relating to the construction and operation of the celebrated Forth Bridge.
The archive includes the following Acts:
Together these volumes provide a remarkable documentary record of nineteenth-century Scottish transport infrastructure, covering railway amalgamations, harbour improvements, navigation legislation, local authority powers and some of the most important engineering projects undertaken during the Victorian era.
Archives of this nature seldom survive intact outside institutional collections. The clear provenance to the Caledonian Railway Solicitor's Office greatly enhances both the historical importance and research value of the collection, making it particularly attractive to collectors of railway history, transport law, Scottish industrial history and Victorian engineering.
Provenance
From the archives of the Caledonian Railway Solicitor's Office, Glasgow, with contemporary gilt ownership lettering to the bindings identifying the volumes as office copies maintained for legal reference.
Notes
A rare survival of an original nineteenth-century railway solicitor's working archive, preserving official parliamentary legislation in contemporary office bindings with exceptional institutional provenance.
Particularly desirable for collectors of Scottish railways, Caledonian Railway, Victorian engineering, transport history, parliamentary history, legal archives and industrial heritage.
