182 PHOTOGRAPHS RELATED TO INDIA · RARE EARTHQUAKE IMAGES · DARJEELING · PUNJAB · KASHMIR
A fascinating and highly personal original vintage photograph album documenting over a decade in the life of Rev. Herbert Taylor Ottley (1859–1944), an English clergyman posted to northeast India. The album spans the years 1897 to 1908 and contains a total of 182 photographs related to India, many of which depict the landscapes, people, churches, and domestic life of British India at the time.
Particularly notable are several rare images of the 1897 Assam earthquake aftermath taken in and around Shillong, capturing the structural damage and upheaval caused by this major seismic event. The album also includes scenes of life in Darjeeling, as well as a tour of Punjab province (including Shadipur, Islamabad, and Gunderbal), Kashmir and Srinagar, and Jhelum and Baramulla. There are several charming views of the Ottley family in and around their bungalow, with horses, ponies, church tents, and guests — including the Bishop of Calcutta.
