A striking piece of Australian 1970s studio jewellery attributed to Lee Eastman, featuring a large polished purple amethyst cabochon dramatically embraced by a substantial sculptural sterling silver setting. Irregular hand-worked silver tendrils, rounded terminals and deeply oxidised recesses create wonderful depth and movement, while the vivid purple stone contrasts beautifully with the darkened silver. Stamped STG SIL and bearing the maker’s mark LEE, this distinctive Melbourne ring has a bold Modernist Brutalist character and strong sculptural presence. An exceptional piece for collectors of Australian studio jewellery and distinctive 1970s silver.

STRIKING VINTAGE MODERNIST AUSTRALIAN STUDIO JEWELLERY

Presenting a striking piece of Australian 1970s studio jewellery, attributed to Melbourne jeweller and goldsmith Lee Eastman.

A large polished purple amethyst cabochon is dramatically embraced by a substantial sculptural silver setting. Irregular hand-worked silver tendrils sweep and curl around the stone, punctuated by rounded terminals and deeply oxidised recesses that create wonderful depth and movement. The organic forms extend beyond the stone, giving the ring a bold yet beautifully considered architectural quality.

Eastman studied Gold & Silversmithing at RMIT before working and training with Tor Schwanck for three years, establishing her first independent studio in Brighton in 1974. This ring is stamped STG SIL and bearing the maker's mark LEE. While the mark differs from the later Lee Eastman mark documented by the Gold & Silversmith Guild Australia, the attribution is supported by the maker’s mark, Melbourne provenance and the strongly Schwanck-influenced character of the work.
