FINE HOFFMAN 1934 MELBOURNE CENTENARY COMMEMORATIVE JUG
Presenting a 1934 Hoffman Ware Melbourne Centenary jug, produced in Melbourne to commemorate the centenary of European settlement.
This charming small jug features raised profile portraits of John Pascoe Fawkner and John Batman, with Melbourne Centenary 1934 moulded around the upper body and the well-known inscription “This will be the place for a village” between the portraits. The warm honey-brown glaze and neatly moulded decoration give the piece a distinctly 1930s character.
A fascinating piece of Australian commemorative pottery, it represents both an important Melbourne anniversary and the work of Hoffman Ware, the Melbourne pottery associated with the Melrose range. Museum collections confirm the production of these jugs in 1934.
