New in the box (the box has wear and some damage as shown). The playing board is a thin leather (it is sealed so I'm not opening it to establish if it is real leather or leather style) and it sits on top of the spongy packaging that protects the pieces and then both slide straight into the box. The pieces are stunning and immaculately painted and are really very cool, especially the ladies!. Kindly note, I initially thought there was some sort of paper or substance stuck on one of the Rook's - both Rook's from one of the teams are identical and so are actually painted this way. I'm really only saying as my honest first reaction was that there was an issue..there isn't..they are identical on all four sides.
