National Lampoon 1964 High School Yearbook Parody

The National Lampoon 1964 High School Yearbook Parody is widely considered a masterpiece of American comedy and a landmark piece of satire from the magazine's golden age. Released as a standalone special issue by National Lampoon magazine in 1974, this painstakingly detailed, 140-page publication went on to sell over 2 million copies. The project was masterminded and largely written by comedy legends Doug Kenney and P. J. O'Rourke. Other notable contributors included Sean Kelly, Christopher Cerf, and Ed Subitzky. Time magazine historically praised the project as an example of "the best comic writing in the country" due to its rich, micro-targeted sociological detail.

The book masquerades as a genuine, ink-inscribed yearbook (titled Kaleidoscope) from the fictional C. Estes Kefauver High School in Dacron, Ohio. Directed by David Kaestle, the magazine rented out a real New York City prep school and cast 20 actors to pose for portraits to capture the visual look of an authentic 1960s yearbook.

The "Animal House" Connection: The parody introduced the world to senior student Larry Kroger, whose permanent records and school ephemera are printed in the back of the issue. Doug Kenney later used this character as the structural foundation for his 1978 hit movie, National Lampoon's Animal House, where Kroger became the freshman pledge known as "Pinto" (played by Tom Hulce).
