This is a restored Westbury 4100 8-track home recording deck. I record 8-tracks for bands and record labels, so I learned to work on players to keep mine running. I fix players for people sparingly as well, although the majority of my time is spent making tapes.
I lubricated all moving parts on this unit including the track change mechanism and the motor. I replaced the belt. I cleaned, aligned, and demagnitized the head.
I replaced all electrolytic capacitors with new Nichicon audio grade caps. I also replaced most ceramic capacitors in the audio circuit with polystyrene caps. There was some noise on the audio jacks, so I grounded those, which fixed that issue.
Playback and recording both sound great! I was able to record a full album and was surprised that it sounded as good as it did.
I was able to get everything working great other than the "auto-stop" function. The relay seems like it's shot but I'm unable to source another one and have no other parts decks that have this exact style relay. I forced the contacts to move manually on the relay, which does perform the auto stop function (the motor stops and the auto stop light comes on), so it would work with a new relay.
I was unable to find a manual for this unit, but I will include a list of everything I performed on the unit. It should work perfect for normal playback and recording use!
Let me know any questions you may have, and keep an eye out for other players I have for sale and others I'll be listing in the future.
