Chartres Cathedral
 (1913)

Utrillo painted the thirteenth century Cathedral of Notre-Dame more in the way of the old masters than his usual style.
His dealer, didn't want Utrillo's huge and ugly handwriting on such a lovely painting and  asked his mother to sign it for him, thus the dainty signature.

About the artist:
Utrillo was born in 1883 to an unwed artist's model.  A friend of his mother's, Miguel Utrillo, gave Maurice his last name. Because he was highly neurotic youngster and a poor student, his mother encouraged him to take up art as a type of therapy.   This therapy unleashed his gift of drawing, leading him to produce thousands of oils, gouaches, water colors, and pencil sketches. His gift for simplification and unerring sense of color relation are instinctive to him.  Utrillo's life long struggle with alcohol and mental illness may, perhaps,  have given him a different perspective on life that was reflected in his art. He is a complete individualist who defies all classifications.
