Antique Chinese conical stoneware bowl with mold-impressed decoration under olive green celadon glaze. The bowl’s interior features three young boys holding vines amid a botanical design. Its outside wall is decorated with an incised wave design, and stands on a short foot.

Styled after celadon created during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1269 CE), when this colored glaze and style was typical of Yaozhou wares.

Northern celadons such as this bowl is in the manner of were produced in Shaanxi province for the domestic market. They are the predecessors of Longquan celadons from southeast China.

Celadon is a French term, named for a character in a 17th century play wearing green. The glaze gets its color when iron oxide reacts to the lack of oxygen during firing, turning green.
