Geboren 1941 in Graz, aufgewachsen in Voitsberg.
Zwischen 1956 und 1962 Studium an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Graz, der Kunstgewerbeschule in Linz und für kurze Zeit an der Akademie in Wien. Freundschaft mit Peter Hauser.
1959 bis 1962 romantische Epoche mit Reisen nach Italien, Jugoslawien, Griechenland und Frankreich.
1963 Reise nach New York,
1965 Beginn mit den Schattenbildern
Seit dieser Zeit lebt Otto Mirtel in München. Otto Mirtel ist ein typisches Beispiel für die jungen Künstler der sechziger Jahre, die bewußt revolutonär vorangehen ("68er-Bewegung"), die das bisher als Kunst Vermittelte in Frage stellen, die neue Materialien verwenden und optische Informationen einbauen und sich intensiv mit Fragen der Natur und Vergangenheitsbewältigung befassen.

Between 1956 and 1962, he studied at the School of Applied Arts in Graz, the School of Applied Arts in Linz and, for a short time, at the Academy in Vienna. He was friends with Peter Hauser.
1959 to 1962: a romantic period with travels to Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece and France.
1963: trip to New York,
1965: began creating shadow pictures
Otto Mirtel has lived in Munich ever since. Otto Mirtel is a typical example of the young artists of the 1960s who consciously took a revolutionary stance (the ‘’68 movement’), who questioned what had hitherto been presented as art, who used new materials and incorporated visual elements, and who engaged intensively with questions of nature and coming to terms with the past.
Various exhibitions and participations in exhibitions at home and abroad (e.g. in Graz, Vienna, Milan, Frankfurt am Main, Berlin and Switzerland). (sezession-graz.at)
