Condition is used and this item shows wear specifically to the metal mount and hinge. The agate also has some chipped edges and possible cracks within.
Research suggests this is likely a memorial or mourning jewellery item, although I can’t guarantee this.
The presence of a hinge, albeit it appears damaged suggests this would have originally opened up, possibly to conceal something, however the bail and top part appear to be fixed to the front and back so I am not entirely sure how this would have worked.
This piece is very much suitable for embracing as an old item of Victorian era jewellery as it is, or perhaps a restoration project for someone who specialises in this style of jewellery.
Metal type is not known and the agate appears to be banded on one side, once again I can’t say for certain.
