"Philips' New Series of Travelling Maps:
Africa North East (With Index)".
published by the
prominent British cartographic firm George Philip & Son.
Publisher: Founded by Scottish cartographer George Philip in
1834, the company became one of the most successful commercial map publishers
of the 19th and 20th centuries
Publication Date: This specific "New Series of
Travelling Maps" case design was published between 1910 and 1930.
Variations of this specific regional layout (often including Egypt) are most
dated to the 1920s and 1930s
Fully opened the map measures 26 inches by 21 inches approx.
( 66cm by 53cm approx.) and closed the cloth covers measure 7.25 inches by 4
inches approx. ( 18cm by 10cm approx.)
It consists of a large, highly detailed engraved paper map
that has been laid on linen backing so it can be easily folded down into this
protective blue cloth cover.
The coverage includes Anglo-Egyptian Sudan and Egypt, Abyssinia
(modern-day Ethiopia) The Horn of Africa (Somaliland) British East Africa
(extending down to Kenya Colony and Uganda
The "Egypt" Boundary (1919–1922): The map outlines
a vast, pink-shaded territory covering Egypt and the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. The
pink shading indicates a British imperial sphere of influence. This matches the
era of the British Protectorate over Egypt, which ended in 1922 when Egypt
gained nominal independence.
German East Africa/Tanganyika Territory (Post-WWI): The
green/shaded area below Lake Victoria has been redrawn following the Treaty of
Versailles (1919). This confirms the map was published after World War I,
rather than during the late 19th-century "Scramble for Africa."
CONDITION
Light marking to covers, internally there are a few small
stains to the reverse of the map (see pictures) but these do not show through
