This listing is for a circa 1840 s Jewish Merchant Token from Benjamin Hyam, a clothing manufacturer in Liverpool, England. Hyam was an ultra-orthodox Jew who closed his shop for Shabbat. At some point he also owned a shop in Manchester and in London as well.

Hyam is given credit for creating modern mass market tailoring, where profit came from sales volume, not high prices. Hyam was born in 1811 and died in 1888. He was married to Kate Gittela Levy. He was the son of Hyam ben Simcha Hyam and Hannah Lazarus.

This token measures 1 3/16/" across.

Obverse: Pictures the facing bust of a man (perhaps of Hyam). It is captioned "B. HYAM / 63 LORD ST. / LIVERPOOL"

Reverse: Pictures 3 different pieces of clothing and is captioned "MANUFACTURING CLOTHIERS / HALFPENNY TOKEN"

There are some signs of aging so please see the photos for more details.
