Condition

Binding Good only. The contemporary leather binding is heavily worn, particularly around the spine and board edges. The spine is frayed with splitting along both joints, although the album remains reasonably sound and usable. The deteriorating leather produces some red surface residue during handling. One leaf may be lacking.

Internally, the photographs are generally Very Good to Good, retaining pleasing tones throughout, with occasional fading and age-toning consistent with nineteenth-century albumen photography. Several mounts display light foxing and age-toning, while loose tissue guards survive between most leaves. We have illustrated many, though not all, of the photographs. Description

A substantial Victorian Grand Tour photograph album, assembled during the closing decades of the nineteenth century and preserving approximately fifty-five original photographs documenting some of Europe's most celebrated tourist destinations. The collection is particularly notable for the unusually large format of many of the photographs, several occupying almost an entire album page and providing exceptionally impressive architectural and landscape views.

The principal focus is Italy, the traditional highlight of every nineteenth-century Grand Tour. The album includes extensive views of Rome, Naples, Pompeii, Amalfi, Capri, Florence and Mount Vesuvius, together with numerous studies of classical ruins, churches, coastal scenery, historic streets and celebrated monuments. Many photographs retain printed captions within the negatives, while others include the names of well-known photographic studios, reflecting the flourishing commercial photography industry that developed around European tourism during the nineteenth century.

Complementing the Italian material are attractive landscape views of Norway, together with smaller groups depicting Switzerland and Britain. These additional photographs broaden the geographical scope of the album and illustrate the increasingly international character of late Victorian leisure travel, when prosperous travellers combined Mediterranean destinations with Alpine scenery and the dramatic fjords of Scandinavia.

The photographs are principally fine albumen prints, supplemented by a handful of later gelatin silver prints and two attractive photochrome images, illustrating the gradual evolution of photographic processes during the lifetime of the album. The mixture of media suggests that the compiler continued adding to the volume over a period of years rather than assembling it all at one time.

Many of the photographs are of an unusually generous size, allowing remarkable architectural detail and panoramic compositions. Subjects include ancient Roman remains, Renaissance architecture, picturesque harbours, mountain landscapes, volcanic scenery and celebrated urban landmarks, presenting a visual survey of the destinations most admired by educated nineteenth-century travellers.

Albums of this scale are increasingly sought after, particularly where they retain their original photographs rather than later reproductions. They provide an evocative record of European travel before the advent of mass tourism and preserve original photographic prints that often possess artistic as well as documentary importance.
