Beautiful vintage Bell China fine bone china 27-piece tea service for six, Pattern No. 4197, made in England by Shore & Coggins.

A particularly elegant set in a warm ivory/cream colour, decorated with broad rich gold bands, fine dark line detailing and extensively gilded handles and rims.

The design has a wonderful late Art Deco appearance, particularly the shaped cake plate with its scalloped edge and moulded scroll detailing.

The service carries two variations of the Bell China backstamp. This is consistent with Bell China production: different factory markings are documented as occurring on pieces within the same tea service. The Bell China name was used by Shore & Coggins at the Edensor Works, Longton, Staffordshire, and the style of backstamp seen here was used from approximately 1936 onwards. I believe this particular service dates to around the 1940s.

Pattern number: #4197

The 27-piece set comprises:

* 6 × teacups — approx. 3¼” diameter × 2½” high

* 6 × saucers — approx. 5⅜” diameter

* 6 × tea/sandwich plates — approx. 7” diameter

* 6 × small butter/lemon plates — approx. 4⅞” diameter

* 1 × milk/cream jug

* 1 × sugar bowl

* 1 × shaped cake/sandwich plate — approx. 8¾” × 8¼”

Condition: Excellent vintage condition overall.

The china presents beautifully and the extensive gilded decoration remains particularly attractive.

Please note: one of the six cups has a hairline crack. The remaining pieces are in excellent condition. Please study the photographs, which form an important part of the description.

A striking and unusually comprehensive Bell China service, ideal for a collector, vintage afternoon tea setting, wedding display or traditional/Art Deco interior.

Made in England.
