This is a GeorgeBaxter-com listing – this means that this item is guaranteed genuine and as described. We only list top quality prints at the right price. We do not sell fakes, later copies (unless very clearly stated), poor-quality or over priced items.
This print is typical of the ‘Grand Tour; showing gondola’s
on the Venice canals. The view is stated as from below the point where the
Grand Canal joins the Canale delta Giudecca, the Church of Sta. Maria della
Salute. The entrance to the Grand Canal can be seen and in the distance is
Saint Mark's.
It is quite common to find these prints wrongly described as by George Baxter.
This is a print by Le Blond & Co circa 1851 printed by Baxter’s patent
process. Le Blond & Co took a licence from Baxter in 1849 and in time they
were looked upon as one his main competitors. This small print comes from a
sheet of 10 prints called ‘The Regal Set’ of miniature needlebox prints that
were meant to cut into individual prints, as this one, and stuck onto the lids
of small boxes contained sewing needles which were very popular at the time and
now very hard to find in that state. This is a miniature of a larger print by
Le Blond which was used as an illustration for the small Peacock, Mansfield
& Sons' Pocket-book, The Keepsake or Ladies' Diary for 1851 and
also sold separately be Le Blond. They also great for other uses as our feedback states "Baxters are perfect pictures to frame for Victorian dollshouse".
The size of the print is 4.5 cm x 2.5 cm
The print is in pristine condition

Baxter Print: A print produced by George Baxter (1804 - 1867). He would
have designed the image, engraved the steel printing plate, prepared up to 20
plus wood or metal blocks each to print an individual colour and then printed
them, all on hand presses, one colour at time, his print of the Coronation of
Queen Victoria took FOUR years to complete.
Baxter Process: From 1849 Baxter sold licences to use his process -
between 1850 and 1870's the companies of Le Blond & Co, J M Kronheim, Myers
& Co, W Dickes, Joseph Mansell and Bradshaw & Blacklock produced work
by Baxter's patent process, these printers are known as Baxter Licensees and
their work as Baxter Licensee prints.
Victorian colour printing of this period, much by the Baxter
Process, was far superior to the majority of colour work that came afterwards
when art and quality were superseded later in the 19th century by the
requirements of quantity at a cheap price. Please see our website for more
information on the printers and examples of their work, many items for sale
About GeorgeBaxter-com - I have been a collector of Baxter prints for
over 40 years and one of the main researchers into the subject.
GeorgeBaxter-com was started in 2001 to promote the work of George Baxter and
his Licensees throughout the world - and to help me dispose of some of the vast
numbers of duplicate items I have amassed…. I have had the pleasure of
supplying private collectors, museums and art galleries throughout the world.
I only sell QUALITY Baxter Prints, Baxter Licensee or Baxter process prints,
all are guaranteed to be 100% genuine and as described. Our guarantee of
authenticity has no time limit. All images are taken under white light to
portray the best possible likeness, and we always endeavour to be 100% honest
with our descriptions. When we say the colours are excellent, we really mean
excellent as we have had the benefit of seeing thousands of prints for
comparison.
My aim is that by informing others we hope to eliminate the sale of poor
quality and fake Baxter items which does nothing to further the interest in
Baxter's work. Please see our fakes and forgeries page on our website -
hopefully it might save you making any costly mistakes.
