No Pussyfooting is the seminal 1973 debut collaborative studio album by British musicians Robert Fripp (guitarist of King Crimson) and Brian Eno (then-keyboardist of Roxy Music).
The Album Structure
The LP consists of exactly two side-long experimental tracks:
Side A: "The Heavenly Music Corporation" – A 21-minute piece recorded in September 1972 at Eno's home studio.
Side B: "Swastika Girls" – An 19-minute track recorded nearly a year later in August 1973 at Command Studios
Musical Technique
The album is widely considered a foundational milestone for ambient and minimalist music.
It introduced a technical production system later dubbed "Frippertronics".
Eno set up two modified Revox reel-to-reel tape recorders to create a continuous delay loop.
Fripp played a Gibson Les Paul guitar over the top, layering real-time solos on top of accumulating, slowly decaying background loops.
"Swastika Girls" added an EMS VCS 3 synthesizer and digital sequencer to the looping mix
"No Pussyfooting":
The phrase was written on a piece of paper pinned to the mixing console.
It was Fripp’s reminder to not compromise or back down due to hostility from managers and Island Records, who feared the project was too uncommercial.
"Swastika Girls":
The provocative title came from a pin-up picture torn out of a discarded adult movie magazine that Eno brought and stuck onto the studio mixing desk
