Offered here is an original 1866 Pennsylvania political campaign booklet titled "Record of Hiester Clymer; and Historical Parallel Between Major General John W. Geary", measuring approximately 9" x 5.75" and consisting of 20 pages. The booklet is lacking its outer cover, as shown in the photographs, but retains its substantial historical and political content.

This scarce Reconstruction-era political publication was produced during the heated 1866 Pennsylvania gubernatorial campaign between Democrat Hiester Clymer and Republican Major General John White Geary, a distinguished Union Civil War officer. The booklet serves as a partisan attack piece against Clymer while promoting Geary's candidacy for Governor.

Among the contents are discussions of the candidates' public records and political positions, including the contentious issue of voting rights for Union soldiers. Also included are official election returns relating to the constitutional amendments that secured voting rights for Pennsylvania soldiers during and after the Civil War. These issues were highly controversial in the immediate postwar period and reflected the broader national struggle over loyalty, Reconstruction, and the political legacy of the Civil War.

Clymer was widely criticized by his opponents for his association with the Democratic peace faction often labeled "Copperheads," who opposed many wartime policies of the Lincoln administration. Geary, by contrast, campaigned as a Union hero whose military service embodied loyalty to the nation and support for the Union cause. The election became one of Pennsylvania's most important postwar political contests, reflecting deep divisions between Democrats and Republicans during Reconstruction.

An excellent primary-source document for collectors of Civil War ephemera, Pennsylvania history, political campaign literature, Reconstruction-era material, gubernatorial elections, and 19th-century Americana. The booklet provides contemporary insight into how political parties sought to influence public opinion in the years immediately following the Civil War.
