Offered for sale is a rare and fully original French Modèle 1945 steel helmet, widely known among collectors as the “Jeanne d’Arc”, or “De Gaulle,” helmet.
The manufacturer’s stamp inside the shell is exceptionally well preserved and clearly shows a 1950 production date. This is a particularly desirable date for the Mle 45, which was produced only briefly between approximately 1948 and 1951 before being phased out and replaced by the French Mle 51 OTAN/NATO helmet.
Developed after World War II to replace the older M26 Adrian helmet, the Mle 45 introduced a distinctive new French design. Its high-domed shell, prominent external metal comb, and front leather brow pad give it an unmistakable appearance. The elevated dome and crest are often said to have been inspired by historical depictions of Joan of Arc’s headpiece, which led to the helmet’s enduring collector nickname.
The Mle 45 represents an unusual transitional period in French military helmet development, bridging the classic Adrian design and the later NATO-influenced Mle 51. Its limited production, short service life, and distinctive construction make it considerably harder to find than most other postwar French helmets.
This example is offered exactly as shown in the photographs. It displays age-related wear, marks, patina, and other evidence of genuine military use and long-term storage. Any manufacturer markings, liner details, some paint loss, leather condition, missing one metal rivet of the strap, no repairs, or other condition issues are documented in the accompanying images.
