Der
Otto-Doppeldecker war ein frühes Militärflugzeug der Vorkriegszeit, entwickelt
in den Münchner Flugmaschinenwerken von Gustav Otto. Es handelte sich um einen
typischen Doppeldecker mit zwei übereinander angeordneten Tragflächen, wie sie
für die Anfangszeit der Motorfliegerei charakteristisch waren und eine
vergleichsweise hohe strukturelle Stabilität boten.
Der
Flugzeugtyp wurde ab 1912 für die neu aufgestellte Königlich-Bayerische
Fliegertruppe produziert und diente vor allem der Pilotenausbildung sowie der
militärischen Aufklärung. Insgesamt waren zwischen 1912 und 1914 rund 63
Maschinen dieses Typs im Einsatz.
Für den
Flugplatz Oberschleißheim besaß der Otto-Doppeldecker eine zentrale Bedeutung:
Mit der Stationierung dieser Flugzeuge begann dort 1912 überhaupt erst die
Geschichte des Flugplatzes als militärischer Luftfahrtstandort. Die Maschinen
stellten die Erstausstattung der bayerischen Fliegertruppe dar und prägten
damit die frühe Nutzung des Areals als Ausbildungs- und Einsatzbasis der
Militärfliegerei.
Im Ersten
Weltkrieg kamen Otto-Doppeldecker zunächst auch an der Front zum Einsatz,
erwiesen sich jedoch bald als technisch überholt und wurden bereits Anfang 1915
durch leistungsfähigere Flugzeuge ersetzt.
Vom
Otto-Doppeldecker sind keine Originale erhalten geblieben; seine Konstruktion
ist heute nur durch Fotografien und Rekonstruktionsprojekte überliefert.
Es existierten
zwei Ausführungen des Flugzeugs: eine frühe Version mit einem kleinen,
gebogenen Seitenruder sowie eine spätere Variante mit zwei großflächigen
Seitenrudern.

Full resin kit of a German two-seated trainer airplane, the Otto Doppeldecker 1913 (early) scale 1/72 by Bird Models (2026). The kit contains 15 resin and 34 metal parts, a photo of the built model and an english-german instruction sheet, no decals included.
Only for experienced modellers, kit is very delicate.
The Otto biplane was an early
military aircraft of the pre-war period, developed in the Munich-based aviation
works of Gustav Otto. It was a typical biplane with two vertically stacked
wings, a configuration characteristic of early powered flight that provided
comparatively high structural stability.
The aircraft type was produced
from 1912 onward for the newly established Bavarian Royal Flying Corps and was
primarily used for pilot training as well as military reconnaissance. Between
1912 and 1914, around 63 aircraft of this type were in service.
The Otto biplane held
particular significance for the airfield at Oberschleißheim Airfield: with the
stationing of these aircraft in 1912, the site’s history as a military aviation
base effectively began. The machines formed the initial equipment of the
Bavarian flying units and thus shaped the early use of the airfield as both a
training and operational base.
At the beginning of World War
I, Otto biplanes were also deployed at the front, but they quickly proved to be
technically outdated and were replaced by more advanced aircraft as early as
1915.
No original examples of the
Otto biplane have survived; its design is known today only through photographs
and reconstruction projects.
There were two versions of the
aircraft: an early version with a small, curved vertical rudder, and a later
variant with two large-area vertical rudders.
