A beautiful and highly collectible 18th-century original hand-coloured etching by renowned Swiss artist and printmaker Johann Ludwig Aberli (1723–1786), titled Chute d’eau apellée Staubbach dans la Vallée Louterbrunnen (“Waterfall called Staubbach in the Valley of Lauterbrunnen”).

Published in 1768, this charming topographical view depicts the spectacular Staubbach Falls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Switzerland—one of Europe’s most celebrated Alpine landscapes. The composition captures the dramatic waterfall cascading from towering cliffs above a peaceful rural scene of traditional Swiss chalets, barns, grazing livestock, figures, and the village church, with distant mountains fading into the background.

Aberli was one of the most influential Swiss landscape artists of the 18th century and helped popularise Alpine scenery through his finely executed hand-coloured etchings. His works are represented in major museum collections including the British Museum and the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Geneva.

The print is engraved and hand coloured, with the inscription below the image:

* Original hand colouring remains attractive with good detail.

* Age-related toning to the paper and mount, consistent with an 18th-century print.

* A couple of areas of dust marks to the underside of glass so would benefit from a good clean. Close up photo provided
