This historic transcontinental cover was mailed from San Francisco in January 1858 and sent via the Panama route to Miss Emma L. Horwell at the historic Abbott Female Seminary (Abbot Academy) in Andover, Massachusetts.

The letter was carried down the Pacific coast by the legendary Pacific Mail Steamship Company paddle steamer, the John L. Stephens. Named after the famous American explorer, this vessel was one of the most prominent mail and passenger carriers of the California Gold Rush era.

1. The Mid-Month Down bound Mail Run (Departed SF January 5, 1858)

Departure: The John L. Stephens departed San Francisco on January 5, 1858, loaded with California mail bags and passengers bound for the East Coast.
The Route: She steamed down the Pacific Coast, stopping briefly for coal and local mail at Acapulco, Mexico.
Arrival at Panama: She arrived at the Port of Panama on approximately January 17–18, 1858.
The Connection: The mail bags were immediately unloaded, transferred to the Panama Railroad, and hauled across the Isthmus to Aspinwall (now Colón). From there, an Atlantic sister ship (likely the Moses Taylor) loaded the mail and sailed to New York, where it was distributed to the rail lines heading north to Andover, Massachusetts.
