Description:

Colour woodblock print 36 x 23.8cms; 40 x 27.2 cms (sheet), the title, date, Unsodo publisher's seal, printer's seal, carver's seal left margin, Unsodo 'Gei' watermark lower left, Kasamatsu's signature and red seal lower right and signed in alphabet lower margin, kento cut (due to the printing process) lower right, sheet a browned in the upper corner, and spotted in the lower margin, but the image in very good condition. Sold with the original typed attribution note of the late C.H. Mitchell one-time International Editorial Secretary of the Japan Ukiyo-e Society.

Kasamatsu Shiro (1898 – 1991) was an active member of the Shin-hanga (New Wood Block) movement, and had a very long and successful career. After the Pacific War, his style evolved, embracing western techniques and this work first published in 1952 showcases his later work. In this image Kasamatsu balances architectural grandeur with atmospheric stillness by highlighting the intricate details of the Nikko Toshogu Shrine's Yomeimon Gate, utilizing soft structural shading, rich mineral blues, and deep charcoal greys to let the intricate structure emerge. Heavy snow blankets the multi-tiered roofs and massive support pillars, rendered through a specialized block printing technique that captures quiet, falling flakes rather than an active storm.
