Context: 1960 Timor Provisional Surcharges
In 1960, a series of provisional surcharged stamps was issued for Timor. This series utilized the existing intricately detailed map definitive stamps that were originally denominated in the "avos" currency. To update the postal rates, the original printed values in the lower right corner were struck through with three heavy black lines. New centavos values were then prominently overprinted in black ink directly onto the map design.
