Unlike the previously listed Portland correspondence, which prepaid the international rate with a pair of 10-pfennig adhesives, this cover uses the single 20-pfennig denomination to satisfy the same overseas letter rate under the Universal Postal Union.

The adhesive is tied by a clear Weimar circular datestamp dated October 4, 1881. Following the sender's manuscript routing instruction, the letter crossed the Atlantic via Great Britain before entering the United States through the New York Foreign Mail Exchange.

The reverse bears a New York October 16 transit backstamp together with a desirable Paid All A accounting marking confirming full prepayment of the international postage. From New York, the letter continued west by rail to Oakville, Napa County, California, then a rapidly developing agricultural community.
