Offered is an original 1903 first edition of "Natick Dictionary" by James Hammond Trumbull, published by the Government Printing Office as Smithsonian Institution, Bureau of American Ethnology Bulletin No. 25. Measuring approximately 9 x 11.5 inches, this substantial cloth-bound reference contains 349 numbered pages (plus preliminary pages) devoted to one of the most important early dictionaries of the Massachusett (Natick) language, with both Natick-English and English-Natick vocabularies. The volume was issued as Bulletin 25 of the Bureau of American Ethnology and remains an important reference for Native American language and New England colonial studies.

James Hammond Trumbull (1821–1897) was one of America's leading nineteenth-century scholars of Native American languages. This work was published posthumously in 1903 and includes an introduction by Edward Everett Hale. The dictionary documents the language made famous through the writings and Bible translations of missionary John Eliot and serves as a foundational reference for the study and preservation of the Massachusett language.

Condition is very good overall for its age. Original dark green cloth binding with gilt spine lettering remains solid. General shelf wear, rubbing, and minor bumping to corners and spine ends are present, along with a few white marks on the rear cover as shown. Interior pages are generally clean with light age toning. An embossed Public Library, Laconia, N.H. ownership stamp appears on the title page, along with a few small library markings. Please examine all photographs carefully for the best representation of condition.

An outstanding reference for collectors of Native American history, American Indian languages, linguistics, ethnology, Smithsonian publications, Massachusett language, New England history, and early twentieth-century government publications.
