John Brown by William Elsey Connelley – 1900 First Edition Topeka Kansas HC
First Edition • Kansas History • Abolition Movement
John Brown by William Elsey Connelley is one of the earliest full-length biographies of the controversial abolitionist whose actions in "Bleeding Kansas" and at Harpers Ferry helped shape the course of American history. Published in Topeka in 1900 by Crane & Company, this first edition was written by one of Kansas's foremost historians and preserves a regional perspective only forty years after Brown's death.
Connelley (1855–1930), secretary of the Kansas State Historical Society and an influential historian of the American West, drew upon early sources, personal recollections, and Kansas historical records to chronicle Brown's life, his role in the territorial conflict, and his enduring influence on the national debate over slavery. More than a biography, this work is an important primary-era interpretation of one of the nineteenth century's most consequential figures.
Good condition. Original publisher's cloth boards show light to moderate soiling with light edge wear. Corners are gently bumped, and the spine ends show curling from age. Hinges remain secure, while the binding is slightly relaxed but sound. The pages exhibit light, even age toning at the edges and remain clean and free of writing or other marks. A solid, honest example of this scarce first edition.
