Vintage Original 35mm Ektachrome Slide: Gapstow Bridge, Plaza Hotel & Waterfowl in Central Park
Location: Gapstow Bridge and the Pond in the southeastern corner of Central Park, Manhattan, New York City, viewed from the north side of the water looking south toward Central Park South.
Date: April 1966, based on mechanical date imprint on the slide mount.

Item Description
This closely framed Central Park view centers on the rustic stone arch of Gapstow Bridge spanning the Pond near East 62nd Street. A goose stands beside the water in the immediate foreground, with a park bench entering from the lower left and additional waterfowl resting on rocks or swimming across the Pond. Small groups of visitors appear beneath and beyond the bridge, while the Plaza Hotel and surrounding Central Park South skyline rise above the leafless early-spring trees. The nearly full-frame arch creates a natural window through which the water, pathways, people, and park landscape remain visible.

Key Photographic Elements
The present Gapstow Bridge was constructed in 1896 by Howard & Caudwell, replacing an ornate wooden-and-cast-iron bridge built in 1874 after the original structure deteriorated. The Pond was deliberately placed below the level of the surrounding streets, allowing visitors to descend rapidly from busy Fifth Avenue into a landscaped retreat while retaining dramatic views of the Midtown skyline. The Plaza Hotel, completed in 1907 at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, is visible at upper right. This photograph was processed only weeks before the May 1966 public hearing concerning the Plaza’s proposed New York City landmark designation; the hotel was formally designated in 1969. Exposed structural steel visible left of center is likely construction of the General Motors Building at 767 Fifth Avenue, erected on the former Savoy-Plaza Hotel site and completed in 1968. The combination of Gapstow Bridge, the Pond, waterfowl, park visitors, Plaza Hotel, skyline, and probable General Motors Building construction creates a richly layered record of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan during a period of architectural change.

Condition Report
The slide retains clear and readable detail throughout the bridge, foreground goose, Pond, waterfowl, visitors, skyline, and surrounding park landscape. Because the photograph was exposed toward the bright sky, the front face of the bridge falls into deep shadow and loses some stone detail. A mild cool-gray color cast, subdued contrast, and scattered small dust specks and minor surface marks are visible, but there is no severe fading, heavy scratching, or significant blur. The original Ektachrome cardboard mount shows light age-related wear but remains intact and presentable.
