The Design & Heritage
Hand-crafted in the historic coastal town of Porthmadog in North Wales, this large earthenware studio charger is a triumph of late 20th-century Welsh art pottery. Hand-thrown on the wheel, the plate is instantly elevated by its remarkable multi-layered reactive glaze technique.
The artisan, J. Jones, has meticulously pooled rich cobalt, deep navy, and frothy slate-blue glazes. As the kiln reached peak temperature, the glazes melted outward in perfectly controlled, concentric radial bands, creating an intricate, feathered mandala pattern that beautifully mimics a sea anemone or the swirling pools of the Welsh coastline.
The base is clearly stamped with the official “Portmadoc Wales” pottery mark and features the crisp, incised cursive signature of the potter, “J. Jones”.
