Antique Japanese brazier, or hibachi fire pot, with original copper liner

Made from entire width of a kiri tree, also known as a princess tree, or Paulownia tomentosa

Bold grain visible

Significant patina to copper liner.

Dates to late 19th century or early 20th century, during the Meiji period (1868-1912). 

A brazier such as this was traditionally used as a space heater. The copper liner would have been half full of wood ash, with carefully arranged charcoal on top.

Measures approx. 12” diam x 8” height
