Antique Bennington Rockingham Stoneware Sea Shell Spittoon 1800s
These molded "fancy" wares were generally unmarked; positive identification of the maker is very uncommon and adds significant value. This is an elaborate, molded Yellow Ware Spitton featuring 12 equally-spaced, rounded panels about the perimeter, each with an embossed Scallop Shell accent. There is a round-shaped drain opening at the intersection of two of the panels, as shown. The fancy "Tortoise Shell" is a glaze known by the Bennington Pottery in Vermont, and their widely popular "Rockingham" pieces.
Measurements: 8” diameter x 3-1/4” tall.
Condition: Excellent overall, considering age and intended use. There is general, age-appropriate wear on the base, including small nicks and shallow chips. No hairlines, cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. Superb embossing and glaze color throughout.
