This vintage Kodachrome slide captures the Emperor Meiji Landing Monument in Hakodate, Japan, photographed in July 1958. The monument consists of a tall stone pillar rising from a stepped base, topped by a globe and a dark bronze phoenix with wings spread dramatically against the blue sky. Traditional Japanese rooflines, trees, utility structures, and low buildings surround the monument, giving the image a clear mid-century urban Hakodate setting. The strong vertical composition emphasizes the height of the monument and the striking silhouette of the phoenix at the top.

Overall, the slide remains attractive, readable, and very usable, with excellent identified Hakodate monument and 1958 Japan travel subject matter.
