c. 1918-1920s; H. G. McFaddin & Co. - New York, NY
Authentic Emeralite Jr. No. 4378 portable lamp base manufactured by H. G. McFaddin & Co., retaining its original green-and-gold "Emeralite Jr." nameplate embossed with the April 16, 1918 patent date. Designed as a compact version of the iconic banker's lamp, the No. 4378 features a spun brass trumpet-form base, articulated ball-and-socket swivel joint with wing adjustment screw, and original bayonet socket. The underside retains the original wall-mounting hardware, allowing the lamp to function either as a tabletop light or be mounted to a vertical surface. While the original green cased-glass shade is no longer present, the lamp remains an excellent example of McFaddin's innovative early twentieth-century portable lighting design.
The first Emeralite lamps were patented in 1909 by Harrison D. McFaddin and became synonymous with high-quality task lighting for banks, libraries, law offices, and executive desks. The "Junior" series, introduced during the 1910s, offered the same patented adjustable construction in a more compact format while retaining the distinctive green glass shade that made Emeralite lamps instantly recognizable.
Lamp base and socket are in excellent overall condition. Original green cased-glass shade is not present. Adjustment screw operates properly, allowing the socket angle to be changed as intended. Underside retains the original wall-mounting hardware, though this function has not been tested. Lamp has been tested and works. Plug is missing its original cardboard insulating insert. Brass exhibits an attractive aged patina with scattered surface wear and minor finish loss consistent with age and use.
