Hand-knit wool children's mittens featuring colorful depictions of the legendary frontiersman Davy Crockett with the name "DAVY CROCKETT" knitted across the cuffs. Each mitten depicts Crockett in his iconic frontier attire, holding a long rifle, while the reverse incorporates geometric striping in complementary earth tones. Knit from natural wool yarn in shades of brown, cream, red, and olive, these mittens reflect the immense popularity of the Davy Crockett phenomenon that swept America following Walt Disney's television series and films in the mid-1950s. Their folk-art styling and hand-knit construction make them a charming example of period children's winter apparel inspired by one of the era's most recognizable frontier heroes.
The nationwide "Davy Crockett craze" began in 1954-1955 following Disney's television miniseries starring Fess Parker, spawning an enormous market for licensed and inspired merchandise including coonskin caps, clothing, toys, and winter accessories.
Exhibits moderate to heavy wear consistent with age and use. Wool fibers display overall fuzzing, pilling, thinning, and surface wear throughout. Both mittens exhibit holes and areas of loss, including a significant opening to the body of one mitten and wear-through at the thumb area. Evidence of previous darning is visible, as shown in the photographs. Knit cuffs remain intact but exhibit stretching and general age-related wear.
