This is an antique Hogarth style carved wood frame.

I am uncertain as to exactly how old this is, as they made Hogarth style frames for at least a couple of hundred years and still do, according to some preliminary research I did. This one definitely has very good age though and it could be from the late 19th or very early 20th century. Please use your judgment.

The overall frame measures 21 inches x 25 inches (53.3 cm x 63.5 cm). The back opening size measures 19 inches x a sliver under 23 inches (48.2 cm x 58.4 cm). The molding width measures 1 1/4 inches (3.2 cm).

Most Hogarth frames I see are made of wood with applied decorative composition going around the interior and exterior. This one however is all carved wood. I am sensing it is machine carved, as opposed to hand carved.

The center is painted black and the outside and inside rims gold.

The frame has quite a bit of wear going around the black painted strip just past the sight edge. This is the area that protrudes outward the most on the frame. I’m not quite sure how that happened though. When looking at the photos, in the bottom left corner, the same area is dented inward in three spots, with the one at the corner the worst. There are a few other ‘dents’ on the same protruding area for some reason. There is other scattered wear to the black painted surface and scattered nicks and dings. Personally I think that when you are standing just a little ways back, most of this tends to blend in with the overall look of the frame. It’s actually a very attractive frame.

It has what is probably its original bubbled and wavy glass, though it does have some scattered scratches to the surface.

It weighs 4 pounds 5 1/2 ounces (1.974 kg).

It has what I always look for in frames, that wonderful old world look!
