** Now with new MOT in May 2026 **

My Classic Volkswagen VW LT28 Devon Royalty Camper Van is a rare conversion considered a luxury specification in its day. It was manufactured in 1978, and is in great condition for its age, with its original (vintage) Devon Royalty interior.

This is not a modern interior, it is unique and original, with a few signs of wear at 48 years old and has a wonderful feel about it. I know of only one other Devon Royalty still in existence, and that is in nowhere near such good condition.

1984cc Petrol engine. Right-hand drive. 4 speed manual gearbox. 79,100 genuine miles on clock, but it is still in occasional use, so may go up slightly. Cam belt replaced at 72,097 miles in 2019. Tax and MOT exempt but comes with MOT until end May 2027 for peace of mind.

Lovely engine, fantastic runner, just purrs along, but at 2.8 tonnes weight with a 55kw (74 bhp) engine, it is not at all fast, so if you are looking for something akin to modern engines this is probably not the choice for you. However, anyone who is familiar with the Mk 1 VW LTs will know that these are sturdy and dependable engines. Very handy inside engine access between front seats.

This would suit an LT28 enthusiast who has a good knowledge of this vehicle and conversion and knows what to expect.

Measurements:

Inside height of van: 183cm (just over 6ft)

Inside width of van: 188cm

Size of main bed: 118x182cm (extending to 188cm without panels for extra leg room)

Exterior length of van: 5metres (parks in normal supermarket parking space).

Weight of van 2.8 tonnes

All tyres replaced with new in Autumn 2021, still good as new with hardly any wear.

Comes with separate drive away awning plus a Fiamma zip awning.

4 berth with additional baby/small child hammock which fits above front cab.

Two front seatbelts and two fixed hooks in rear of van (no rear seatbelts but these could be fitted).

Great van for festivals and off grid camping with 240 / 12 volt / gas. With hook up. Separate leisure battery which gets recharged from main battery whilst running and keeps you going for a few days before needing to recharge.

Original rare Devon Royalty vintage interior. Some fixtures and fittings showing a few signs of wear but upholstery in very good condition. The bathroom is excellent, with original shower, plus curtain and also a ceiling fan. The flooring is not original and a couple of the vinyl tiles could do with replacing.

Gas oven, two ring hob and grill, 3 way fridge, all working.

Sink with hot and cold water taps.

Hot water heater (external) currently not working. I have never used this, but was told that it had been working before I bought the van,  so probably needs a service. It is however plumbed in to the shower and sink, so potentially would supply hot water to both kitchen and bathroom. It also has an internal gas heater which is connected to electric blown air ducts to the rear seating/bed area and the wardrobe/bathroom, and a thermostatic control to regulate the temperature. I have only used this on one occasion, so it also probably needs a service to ensure it is working correctly.

Separate external lockable cupboard for Campingaz gas bottles (fits 2) connects directly to gas system inside van.

Lots of cupboards which open and close plus storage under back seats and large storage area over cab. Large cold water tank underneath with pump for sink and shower, plus sink waste tank which needs a new drain installing. I have fitted a temporary drain pipe and tap which work fine, or you could just use hose and separate external grey water container for waste. I can include this in the sale if required. There is also the original chemical toilet as originally supplied with van and I have replaced the original seals so it is working perfectly well, or you could simply replace this with your own, new, PortaPotti type toilet if preferred.

Ladder included for top bunk. Two opening ceiling roof vents with fly screens.

The campervan had a full restoration bare metal respray in 2017 to original paint spec. A couple of small rust spots to bottom of rear and passenger side doors and a few other tiny spots here and there but these were wax oiled as soon as they appeared in 2020 which has stopped further spread. They are minor and cosmetic only but needed to mention. Apart from these, the van is structurally solid and in good condition underneath, with no obvious signs of corrosion apparent. It is exceptionally good for a 48 year old vehicle. The side sliding door is in excellent condition.

Very handy rear luggage rack. Two full sets of keys.

Rare number plate: WRX 47T

Rare gear stick knob (black VW Golf ball)

All original manuals for all equipment, including wiring diagrams in a folder, plus vehicle garage receipts.

There is even a panel which was not used in the original conversion which carries a pencil message from the original fitter dated 19/6/78 “Fitted by PJ Laird at Devon Conversion, Sidmouth, Devon. Nice sunny day, no rain as yet, sea calm, no wind. Working time 7:30 - 6:30. Pay not very good”. I can supply photos but reached the limit for this ad.

240 mains hook up powers 3 plugs inside.

Separate leisure battery which charges off main battery when running. Both batteries situated behind passenger seat for easy access.

Fuse box behind driver seat.

Thatcham steering lock included.

Interior lights are powered by the leisure battery. The two rearmost interior strip lights were not working when I acquired the van, so I have replaced them with new LED strip lights ( I still have the original strip lights for originality, and can included these in the sale) and I also fitted two new LED spot reading lights. This van would also be perfect to add solar panels to.

Completely insulated living and sleeping area, making it very cosy.

Engine coolant temperature indicator needle doesn’t always work, temperamental and has always been like this (doesn’t affect anything, just display), but it does not have any overheating problems and does not loose any coolant. When the gauge is working, it shows a comfortable position around a third position between cold and hot.

This is a very reluctant sale, as I have thoroughly enjoyed using this van in the three years I have owned it. But unfortunately other projects such as a new roof on my house, and my other classic car needing some restoration, means that I have to pass this absolute beauty on to someone new who will cherish and enjoy it. This will be a lovely purchase for the right people. It gets lots of attention at shows and festivals, such as at the recent Veedub and Retro festival, and the Inter-Club show at the Malvern Showground in 2024. I have also used it for some very successful holidays, the last being a 400 mile round trip to Chester via north Wales last autumn, when it drove superbly with not a moment’s problem.

I reserve the right to end this listing early as also advertised elsewhere.

I recommend viewings / test drive for serious buyers. But please note that I am based in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, so bear that in mind when considering travelling down for a viewing.

Payment by cleared bank transfer only prior to transfer of vehicle.

I can supply more photos if requested. Also please take a look at the information on my Vehicle Facts Disc, with history and information on this campervan. Just scan the QR code on the last photo to take you to the website. This also includes a copy of the original sales literature/brochure for the Devon Royalty. I will be happy to transfer this website and vehicle facts disc to the successful purchaser, to be able to continue its story and history.
