SWITZERLAND 1928 5c & 20c PRO JUVENTUTE BLOCKS OF FOUR ON REGISTERED EXPRESS COVER ZURICH TO ERMATINGEN
1928 (Dec. 21), commercial registered and express cover from Zurich to Ermatingen, Thurgau, franked with two blocks of four of the 1928 Pro Juventute semi-postal issue. The face of the envelope in 53A is franked with a block of four of the 5c violet, red, and white stamp (cantonal coat of arms of Vaud/Lausanne) and a block of four of the 20c red and black stamp (cantonal coat of arms of St. Gallen), all cleanly tied by black circular date stamps inscribed "ZÜRICH 3 / HAUPTBAHNHOF" ['21.XII.28']. The face features a red typed service indicator "CHARGE-EXPRESS", a paper registration label reading "R Zürich 3 Hauptbahnhof No 464", and a pink typographic "Eilsendung / Exprès - Espresso" label. It is type-addressed to the banker Herr W. Tschudi in Ermatingen. The reverse in 53B exhibits a typed sender endorsement from the prominent hotelier line "A. SCHNELL, Hotel St. Gotthard, ZUERICH." and a crisp circular arrival backstamp of "ERMATINGEN" dated December 21, 1928. The envelope is intact and in clean commercial condition.
This domestic registered express cover maps a rapid, high-priority holiday transmission from the central railway station post office in Zurich to a private banker in the canton of Thurgau. The postal markings record an exceptionally swift transit sequence, leaving Zurich on the morning of December 21 and achieving same-day express tracking and drop-off by late afternoon. The substantial 1Fr total face value, paid via two complete multi-subject blocks of four from the annual winter Pro Juventute charity campaign, perfectly satisfies the multi-tier domestic registration, express handling, and letter tariffs of the period.
Please examine lot scan carefully and please send any questions at least 48 hours before the auction closes. Please note that cover condition usually includes normal wear and tear to cover edges, opening tears and some creases and wrinkles. Only exceptional or extreme condition issues will be mentioned.
