The 1965-66 season was one of the most important in American Hockey League history. During this season, the AHL entered into a limited interlocking schedule with the Western Hockey League (WHL), as the two leagues explored the possibility of closer cooperation and even a potential merger. Although these cross-league games did not count in the standings, they represented one of the most ambitious experiments in professional hockey outside the NHL.
The growing strength of both the AHL and WHL during the mid-1960s is widely believed to have influenced the National Hockey League's historic 1967 expansion, as the NHL sought to secure its position as North America's premier professional hockey league.
On the ice, the Quebec Aces captured first place during the 1965-66 regular season, while the Rochester Americans won their second consecutive Calder Cup Championship.
The Pittsburgh Hornets, one of the AHL's most successful and historic franchises, remained a perennial contender and longtime affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. Programs from this era feature many future NHL players and coaches and remain highly collectible among vintage hockey enthusiasts.
