AUSTRIA 1954 SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE ROTTMAYR FDC TO AUSTRALIA
1954 (Aug. 4), International First Day Cover from Salzburg to Cottesloe, West Australia. The envelope is franked with a single 1s green 1954 Salzburg Festival commemorative adhesive honoring the baroque painter Johann Michael Rottmayr von Rosenbrunn. The stamp is tied to the upper right corner by a circular SALZBURG / 4.8.54 / 2 town cancellation, which simultaneously anchors a large, integrated black pictorial machine cancel depicting a post horn and a fan-folded banner reading SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE / 1.9.5.4. An octagonal first day cachet inscribed Ersttag with a central post horn and Austrian federal eagle is struck cleanly at the top center.
The left third of the envelope features an elaborate, matching grey-and-black illustrated cachet depicting Rottmayr painting on a wooden scaffolding structure, designed by artist J. Gerstmann, with a vertical text column reading Joh. Michael Rottmayr von Rosenbrunn / Kirchenmaler 1654-1730. Dual-language printed markers reading ERSTTAG-FIRST DAY OF ISSUE stand above a purple stamped tariff designation: Drucksache Imprimé! Typewritten address on a cream paper overlay reads Miss Alice M. Ferrier, 8 Griver Street, Cottesloe, West-Australia. The reverse features a single-line typewritten sender imprint on the upper flap: Frederic Patka Wien 8, Lerchenfelderstrasse 70/6, Austria Europe. The envelope is in a sound and intact state of preservation.
This international first day cover tracks a highly visual, cross-continental commercial and artistic path from the 1954 Salzburg Festival to Western Australia. Dispatched on the exact release date of the Rottmayr centenary stamp, the piece represents an early post-war commemorative run specifically routed under the economical UPU international printed-matter tariff. The meticulous combination of the official Salzburg event machine postmark, the custom "Ersttag" verification mark, and the hand-signed artist cachet emphasizes the active role Viennese philatelic trade agents like Frederic Patka played in exporting new Austrian cultural emissions to specialized colonial collectors globally.
Please examine lot scan carefully and please send any questions at least 48 hours before the auction closes. Please note that cover condition usually includes normal wear and tear to cover edges, opening tears and some creases and wrinkles. Only exceptional or extreme condition issues will be mentioned.
