AUSTRIA ITALY 1852 3KR FOLDED LETTER  RIVA TO DESENZANO

1852 (Mar. 15), Cover from Riva, Tyrol to Desenzano, Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom. Franked with a single 1850 3kr red Coat of Arms, handmade paper issue, possessing clear to comfortable margins on three sides and cut slightly close along the lower right border. The adhesive is tied to the upper right corner by a well-struck, circular RIVA / 15 / 3 town datestamp. Addressed in a neat script to Signor Giuse. Polidoro in Desenzano, the reverse panel shows a distinct, two-line DESENZANO / 17 MAR. arrival transit strike. The outer cover presents a clean appearance without internal contents, showing typical light horizontal aging creases and minimal corner wear consistent with standard postal handling. [Sassone #3].

This cross-border cover documents the postal traffic tracking along the contested boundaries of the Austrian Empire in northern Italy just prior to the unification wars. Mailed in March 1852, the item highlights the critical transit nexus of Riva (Riva del Garda), a strategic port town located at the northernmost apex of Lake Garda. While ethnically Italian, Riva was administratively positioned inside the Austrian County of Tyrol, a political reality that shifted after World War I when the city permanently became a part of Italy. The destination of Desenzano, situated at the southwestern edge of the same lake, placed the correspondence directly inside the borders of the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom, which was governed by Austria under a strict state of military surveillance following the uprisings of 1848. The reliance on these localized, lake-based trade connections underscores how mercantile and personal communication networks persevered across internal administrative frontiers despite the underlying geopolitical frictions.

Please examine lot scan carefully and please send any questions at least 48 hours before the auction closes.
