Description:
Offered here is an exceptionally rare and visually striking antique Vienna bronze inkwell stand, attributed to W. Braun, featuring a beautifully cast figural owl—a classic symbol of wisdom and scholarship.
After extensive research over several months, I have been unable to locate another example of this model, making this a truly scarce and desirable piece for collectors of Vienna bronzes and antique desk accessories.
The stand is richly decorated with finely detailed elements including laurel leaves, books, rolled documents, and quill pens, all rendered in high-quality bronze consistent with the finest Vienna works of the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1900).
The hinged owl head lifts to reveal the original inkwell compartment (note: glass insert is missing).
Included is an 8.25" bronze letter opener with a matching figural owl handle. While likely not original to the stand, it complements the set beautifully and was likely paired later due to the shared owl motif. The letter opener retains traces of its original gilt finish, with expected wear.
