Shapland & Petter Attributed Arts & Crafts Oak Gentleman’s Wash/ Shaving Stand
An exceptionally elegant Arts & Crafts gentleman’s wash or shaving stand, attributed to the renowned Barnstaple makers Shapland & Petter, celebrated for their refined craftsmanship and beautifully proportioned Arts & Crafts furniture of the late 19th and early 20th century.
Executed in richly figured quarter-sawn oak, this wonderfully vertical piece features a compact upper drawer above a cupboard compartment, raised upon slender tapering legs united by an under-tier shelf with shaped gallery sides. Above sits a circular adjustable mirror mounted upon an extending support, allowing the mirror height to be altered depending on use.
The overall design is understated yet deeply sophisticated, a hallmark of the Arts & Crafts movement, balancing practicality with clean architectural form and beautifully selected oak grain throughout. The proportions are particularly pleasing, giving the stand a graceful silhouette despite its compact footprint.
Originally intended as a gentleman’s shaving or wash stand, this piece would have sat within an Edwardian bedroom or dressing room. Today it lends itself beautifully as a decorative accent piece, hallway cabinet, bedroom vanity, or occasional Arts & Crafts display stand.
The piece retains excellent period character throughout. Signs of age and use are present, including evidence that the stand would once likely have had copper side rails, presumably used for towels or wash cloths. These are no longer present, though the omission does little to detract from the stand’s overall aesthetic appeal and functionality.
A beautifully honest and highly decorative Arts & Crafts interior piece with strong attribution and excellent visual presence.
