New Boxed A06019A Airfix 1:72nd Scale McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1/FGR.2 Model Kit.
One of the most famous machines of the Cold War, the Phantom F-4 was operated by both the Royal Navy and in an altered form by the RAF from the late 1960s until the 1990s. The Royal Navy was the first export customer for the F-4, but wished to retain engine commonality across its carrier borne fast jet fleet so opted for their Phantoms to be powered by the Rolls Royce Spey jet engine.
This necessitated a subtle redesign of the rear fuselage, as well as changes to the electrical systems and the Royal Navy at sea by another power Phantoms were designated FG.1 with later machines for the RAF designated FGR.2.
The Royal Navy Phantoms operated from HMS Ark Royal and were the only Phantoms operated at sea by another power other than the United States but after the retirement of the Navy's large aircraft carrier the Phantoms were passed to the RAF.
This model makes up into three different versions, the first is a Phantom FGR.2 of RAF No.53 Squadron, Royal Air Force Wattisham, Suffolk, England 1991,
the second is the Phantom FG.1 as flown by Wing Commander John Brady and Flight Lieutenant Michael Pugh Davis of No.43 Squadron "Fighting Cocks" as part of their successful air speed record between Land's End and John O'Groats on February 24th 1988
and the third is a Phantom FG.1 of No.892 Naval Air Squadron, HMS Ark Royal/USS Saratoga, 1978
This makes up into a very nice large model and is listed as skill three so is not a suitable kit for beginners.
