Twentieth Century Classics Kansas Set – 1900 Crane & Co. 2 Vol Leather Bound

Kansas History • John Brown • James Lane • 2 Volume Set

The Twentieth Century Classics is a remarkable two-volume Kansas reference set published by Crane & Company of Topeka at the dawn of the twentieth century. Beautifully bound in quarter leather with marbled paper boards and decorative patterned endpapers, these volumes bring together some of the most important historical, literary, scientific, and cultural works produced during Kansas's formative years.

Volume I contains Selections from Ironquill (1899), James Henry Lane: The "Grim Chieftain" of Kansas (1899), Wyandot Folk-Lore (1899), Birds of Kansas (1900), and Kansas in Literature (Volumes I & II, 1900). Volume II includes The Geological Story of Kansas (1900), Kansas Territorial Governors (1900), Plants and Flowers of Kansas (1900), John Brown (Volumes I & II, 1900), and Richard Realf's Free-State Poems (1900).

Together, these volumes form an exceptional survey of Kansas history, politics, natural history, literature, abolitionism, folklore, and frontier culture. Sets are seldom encountered complete and possess outstanding shelf appeal, making them highly desirable for collectors of Kansas history, Western Americana, and regional publishing.

Good condition. Both volumes are attractively bound in quarter leather with marbled paper boards and patterned endpapers. The leather spines show moderate age wear and rubbing, contributing to the handsome antique appearance of the set. Volume I shows moderate wear along the cover edges, with rounded corners and wear through to the boards. Binding remains tight and secure, and the text is lightly toned with age.

Volume II exhibits similar wear, with a split along the rear hinge that leaves a portion of the spine covering somewhat loose near the top edge; however, the binding remains sound and stable. Interior pages are clean overall with light age toning. An attractive and highly displayable Kansas set with excellent shelf presence.
