This appears to be an exceptionally rare bespoke
undergraduate or academic souvenir album of caricatures of Oxford Dons &
Masters, The images are on photographic paper and are from a series called
Shrimpton's Oxford Caricatures, & Our Public Schools by Thomas Shrimpton
& Son. In the 1870s and 1880s, students would walk into the Thomas
Shrimpton & Son bookstore on Broad Street, buy these individual
photographic prints for a few pence each, and take them to a local Oxford
bookbinder (such as Maltby’s or Morrell). The binder would construct a rugged,
elegant album like this to permanently preserve the student's personal record
of university life, gossip, and rivalries before they graduated and left
Oxford.
Many of the images have contemporary handwritten annotations
to them
