Artistic Characteristics
Porcelain Construction: The yunomi are typically made from high-quality porcelain — a dense, white clay that becomes smooth, strong, and glossy after firing. Overglaze Enamel Decoration: Kutani is famous for vivid overglaze enamels — rich colors layered on top of a glossy surface and then fired again to set the design.
Signature Colors: Traditional Kutani pieces often use a palette called Kutani Gosai: green, blue, yellow, purple, and red — boldly painted in floral, landscape, or symbolic motifs.
Styles & Techniques: Various stylistic traditions evolved, including:
Ko-Kutani: older style with dramatic deep colors.
Yoshidaya style: soft lines and flower/bird motifs.
Akae and Saibyo: red line and fine decorative styles.
Hand Painting & Marks
Many authentic pieces are hand-painted by skilled craftsmen. Individual marks — often the Japanese characters for Kutani (九谷) or kiln names — may appear on the bottom.
Hand-painted pieces can vary slightly in design from cup to cup, a sign of genuine artisan work.
