Five long years have passed since 21st century psychedelic rock maestro
Kevin Parker has his musical collaborators released the last Tame Impala
studio album. Given the project's popularity, it's been a frustrating
wait for fans. It signals something of a change in direction, too, with
the Australian singer/songwriter/producer drawing influence from his
experiences in Australia's "bush-doof" scene (their equivalent of the
UK's free party/illegal rave movement). While he's hardly gone full-on
rave, his saucer-eyed lead vocals and gravelly psyche-rock guitars now
rub shoulders with colourful synth sounds and, on recent single 'End of
Summer', a mix of deeply hallucinatory TB-303 "acid" sounds and surging,
house-influenced indie-dance beats. It's basically psych-rock/indie
dance fusion - and very good it is too.
