guardhouse in Samarang (Semarang) is struck by lightning during the
atmospheric disturbances, killing three locals and severely injuring two
others.
Initial reports blamed Mount Gede,
but officials later confirmed the eruption came from Mount Guntur
(located in the Regency of Limbangan, residency of Preangar).
Extent of the Impact
Severity: It
was noted as the most severe earthquake experienced in Java in thirty
years.
Ash Spread: The
shower of volcanic ash travelled a massive distance, reaching over 80
miles westward to the frontiers of the residency of Bantam (Banten).
Damage: Despite the intense
shaking and heavy ash fall, the report notes that no major structural
damage was caused by the eruption itself.
