Additional Notes: Mellone's 10/15/33 - 2. $40.00

Autographed by Macon Commander Alger H. Dresel U. S. N. !!

Addressed to:
Oscar Hengstler
West New York, NJ

Dresel had served as Commander on the USS Akron for only six and a half months. On the evening of April 3, 1933, the USS Akron left Lakehurst on a routine training flight. Shortly after midnight on the morning of April 4th, after 17 months in service, the airship crashed in the stormy Atlantic and 73 men were killed. The Akron's loss spelled the beginning of the end for the rigid airship in the Navy, especially since one of its leading proponents, Rear Admiral William A. Moffett, perished with her.

The USS Macon first flew on 21 April, aloft over northern Ohio for nearly 13 hours with 105 aboard, just over a fortnight after the loss of the Akron. Macon was commissioned into the U.S. Navy on 23 June 1933, with Commander Alger H. Dresel in command.

Very Fine Condition.

Hi! I just purchased hundreds of great dirigible covers and ephemera! USS Akron, Macon, Goodyear, Shenandoah, Graf Zeppelin, Defender, Puritan and more! Be on the lookout as many have autographs of Eckener, Dresel, Rosendahl, Crew Members, Survivors, Pilots, Captains & More! Some are unique! In addition to that, there are many original photos, postcards & even 2 pieces of fabric from the USS Akron!

In general, all of my USS Akron and USS Macon covers are in very fine condition. If it's not, I'll note faults above. Please view the scans to form your own opinion on condition. Additional information upon request. Just message me! Thanks for looking, and thanks in advance for your bids!

In general, postal history items will be in fine / very fine or XF condition. Many like FDC's will be in pristine condition. Standalone stamps will be described. Additional information upon request. Just message me! Thanks for looking, and thanks in advance for your purchases!

I've had slight issues with inventory control. Please allow me to a few hours to confirm that I have your item(s) before you pay for it (them).
I'll send an invoice
to you through eBay or Sixbit software which will confirm that I have the item. This only affects 1 out of 100 items, but I don't want customers to be disappointed. I think this will help. Thanks, Dave
