Here’s an Eocene Equisetalean Cone in matrix from Western Sahara. This cone measures roughly 66 mm x 16 mm.

There is some new info regarding these so-called “Pine Cones” from Western Sahara. A very knowledgeable friend suggests they may actually be fossil Equisetalean (Horsetail) cones. Looking at the external structures and the internal structures from slices of these cones, I’m inclined to agree. There are also some sources suggesting the cones are actually Cretaceous in age, rather than Eocene, but most sources of these cones currently claim they are Eocene.
